GRASP (Graded Repetitive Arm Supplementary Program) is an arm and hand exercise program that we developed for stroke patients with upper extremity impairments. We know that more arm and hand activity early after a stroke can improve outcomes. GRASP provides one method for patients to undertake a self-directed arm and hand exercise program. Funded by a Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon grant, we showed that patients who supplemented standard rehabilitation care with GRASP had better arm and hand function than a control group who only had standard rehabilitation care. Better function was demonstrated when patients were discharged from the rehabilitation hospital and also at 5 months post-stroke. A physical therapist or occupational therapist instructed the patient in the program, but the patient did the program independently. It is important to note that better outcomes were achieved if the patient has family, friends or a caregiver who assisted with GRASP. The GRASP author, contributors and supporting institutions shall not be liable for any damages, injuries, claims, liabilities, costs or obligations arising from the use or misuse of this material. If you have or suspect you have a health problem, you should consult your health care provider.
